Pastor Patience Umo Eno, wife of Akwa Ibom State Governor, has called for collective efforts to combat gender-based violence in the state.
Speaking at the Akwa Ibom State Gender-Based Violence Awareness Month, she noted the need for collaboration between government, organisations, and individuals to stem the tide of gender crimes.
Represented by Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, Pastor Patience Eno commended the committee’s efforts in reducing human rights violations and described GBV as a serious health issue affecting individuals, families, and communities.
She urged active participation in the campaign, stressing that the fight against GBV is a fight for justice and equality for all.
Professor Mojisola Eseyin, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Uyo, called for special GBV courts, adequate funding, therapeutic centres, and GBV response units in religious organisations to expedite pending cases and hasten the judicial process.
Barrister Emem Ette, Secretary of the State GBV Management Committee, narrated a tragic incident of abuse leading to a female victim’s demise, emphasising the need for collective responsibility and citizen engagement to end the scourge of violence.
The event aimed to raise awareness, start conversations, and chart new pathways to end gender-based violence in Akwa Ibom State.
