Breaking: Labour declares nationwide strike over minimum wage

Members of the organized labour declared a nationwide indefinite strike on Friday due to the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.

Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero announced the strike at a press conference at Labour House in Abuja, stating it would commence at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

Earlier that day, negotiations between the Federal Government and organized labor reached an impasse as the government stood firm on its N60,000 offer.

The NLC and TUC had set a deadline of May 31, 2024, for a new minimum wage agreement.

On Tuesday, talks fell apart when the government, along with the organized private sector, increased their offer to N60,000 from an initial N57,000. This proposal was rejected by labor.

During the meeting, labor revised its demand, lowering it from N497,000 to N494,000.
