The Lagos State Government has shut down over 840 event Centres and social facilities due to safety violations and failure to comply with existing laws.
The Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations disclosed that safety officers from the state’s Emergency and Fire Rescue agency saved 376 individuals and safeguarded properties valued at N152.22 billion. However, they also reported the unfortunate loss of 82 lives and properties worth N25.37 billion.
The ministry noted that the closure of these event centers aims to reduce risks and ensure the safety of both the government and citizens.
Speaking at a Ministerial Press Briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, the Commissioner, Gbenga Oyerinde, outlined the ministry’s accomplishments over the past year.
He mentioned that the Lagos State Safety Commission conducted enforcement actions at 840 facilities, including event Centres, clubs, lounges, hotels, and construction sites, to address safety concerns and protect public safety.
The sealed facilities included notable venues such as the Lekki Conservation Centre and Quilox. Additionally, approximately 7,819 establishments were inspected to verify safety compliance, with 5,220 issued fire safety certificates.
Earlier in March, the government reopened the Lekki Conservation Centre after completing maintenance work prompted by a viral video on social media highlighting safety issues with the canopy walk bridge and other areas.
In infrastructure development efforts, the commissioner noted the near-completion of three new fire stations in Ijegun-Egba, Satellite Town, and Ijede, along with an advanced workshop at the Alausa headquarters to enhance fleet maintenance for the agency.
Regarding emergency response, statistics showed a total of 2,537 incidents, including 1,627 fire calls, 191 rescue calls, 93 salvage calls, and four explosions, with 607 false alarms reported.
The ministry’s actions highlight the Lagos State Government’s commitment to ensuring safety and compliance with regulations across various sectors.
The proactive measures taken, including the inspection and closure of non-compliant facilities, aim to safeguard the well-being of residents and protect valuable properties.
Oyerinde’s briefing underscores the importance of adherence to safety standards and the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance emergency response capabilities and infrastructure. The new fire stations and maintenance workshop are expected to significantly improve the state’s ability to respond to emergencies and prevent future incidents.
