WSiCE Plans Events in Lagos, London to Celebrate Wole Soyinka’s 90th Birthday

The Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange (WSiCE) is gearing up for its 15th annual event, scheduled from July 13 to July 27, 2024.

This year’s edition is particularly special as it coincides with the 90th birthday of the Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka.

The event, which originated in 2010, aims to honor Soyinka’s remarkable contributions as an artist and global advocate for humanity.

It will take place in two parts: from July 13 to 16, both virtually and in Nigeria, and from July 19 to 27 in London, England.

Themed ‘E.N.I.O.G.U.N – Engaging National Interest on Good Governance, Understanding, and Nation-Building,’ this edition focuses on Nigeria, reflecting Soyinka’s lifelong dedication to his country as an artist, intellectual, and activist.

The event will include activities such as essay writing, advocacy, and artistic performances, highlighting Soyinka’s diverse talents and his commitment to societal improvement.

Dr. Teju Kareem, Executive Producer of WSICE, emphasized Soyinka’s global impact, stating, ‘His work serves as a beacon for justice and equality, transcending boundaries of age, class, and belief.’

In addition to artistic performances, the event will feature the London premiere of a film inspired by Soyinka’s memoir, ‘The Man Died,’ underscoring his enduring influence on literature and culture.

With collaborations from esteemed institutions like The Africa Centre, London School of Economics, and Bournemouth University, WSICE continues its mission to promote unity and dignity through literature, arts, and culture, with a focus on empowering youth for a brighter future.
