Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the reported deportation of Osun indigenes from Lagos State.
Following reports on Saturday of Osun indigenes being picked up by police officers from areas like Ajah, TBS, and Lagos Island, Obi took to his social media to express his dismay, labeling the deportations a violation of citizens’ rights.
“I am deeply saddened and shocked by the recent reports of the deportation of citizens mostly of Osun State origin by Lagos State authorities,” Obi wrote. “This action is not just concerning Osun State but all Nigerians who value unity, fairness, and justice.”
Highlighting the potential impact on national cohesion and development, Obi emphasized the importance of treating every Nigerian with dignity and respect, regardless of their state of origin or place of residence.
He called for unity among Nigerians and urged vigilance as investigations unfold, while also stressing the need to uphold the values of fairness and justice.
Meanwhile, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter and engaged with Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who also expressed shock and pledged urgent action.
Residents have been urged to remain calm as security agencies monitor the situation.
