EFCC accuses Emefiele of Printing N684.5m with N18.9bn

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has lodged fresh charges against the embattled former Central Bank governor, Godwin Emefiele, at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.

In the new charge, EFCC alleges that Emefiele sanctioned the printing of N684,590,000 valued at N18.96 billion, a move deemed unlawful by the anti-graft agency.

According to EFCC, Emefiele’s actions during the implementation of the naira swap policy under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration violated the law and harmed the public interest.

The charge, dated April 2, 2024, and identified as Suit No: CR/264/2024, outlines four counts including disobeying the law to penalize Nigerians, illegal money printing, and abuse of office.

EFCC’s top prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, asserts, “Emefiele will be arraigned before Justice Hamza Muazu,” highlighting counts of disobeying the law and abusing public trust.

This comes in the wake of Emefiele’s previous arraignment on charges of procurement fraud and abuse of office, making it one of Nigeria’s most prominent corruption cases under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

On April 8, 2024, Emefiele faced further allegations alongside Henry Omoile for an alleged $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion fraud before Justice R.A. Oshodi of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos.
