Don’t destabilise APC, Ebonyi gov warns defectors

By Chukwuma Okoro

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State issued a strong appeal to new members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, urging them to avoid actions that could spark crises or divisions within the party. He made these remarks during the funeral of the late HRH, Christopher Igboke Ewa, who was tragically murdered in his home in February 2023, held at Ezza North Local Government Area.

Expressing concern, Governor Nwifuru criticized defectors who have begun forming factions within the party, cautioning that such behavior could jeopardize the current harmony and cohesion within the APC. “To those of you who recently joined our party and are already forming factions, I urge caution,” warned Nwifuru.

The governor also expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of some of his appointees, citing an incident where they engaged in a scuffle during a defection rally in Ezza North Council headquarters. In response, he directed the family of the late Ewa to nominate a candidate for appointment as commissioner, aiming to resolve internal conflicts within his administration.

Nwifuru issued a stern warning to local government chairmen accused of neglecting their duties and inciting discord, emphasizing his commitment to a peaceful governance transition. He emphasized the importance of unity, announcing that key political figures like former Governor David Umahi, Chief Martin Elechi, and Senator Pius Anyim would play pivotal roles in selecting his successor.

The governor also addressed recent political tensions in Ezza South and North Council Areas, assuring the late ruler’s family that justice would be served for his murder. He urged citizens to foster peace and eschew animosity among themselves.

During the burial ceremony, Governor Nwifuru was joined by prominent figures including former Governor and current Minister of Works, Engr David Umahi, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, and several senators and legislators from Ebonyi State, demonstrating a unified front amidst these challenges.
