Recent reports have revealed that Israel utilized a long-range, supersonic missile known as the “Rampage” during a strike on Iran last week. Initial information suggests that this missile, designed for high-speed attacks on ground targets like military installations, was deployed in the operation.
US officials have indicated that the strike specifically targeted a military base near Isfahan, with various sources providing details on the weaponry involved. Iran, however, has downplayed the incident, acknowledging only the use of small drones in the attack.
The Rampage missile, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), is optimized for precise strikes on critical infrastructure such as communication hubs, air bases, and command centers. Weighing 1,250 pounds, this seekerless, long-range air-to-ground weapon is renowned for its capabilities.
Despite reports suggesting the involvement of the Blue Sparrow missile, with analyses based on debris found in Iraq hinting at its potential deployment, no official confirmation has been provided. The Blue Sparrow is an air-launched ballistic system with a range of up to 1,240 miles, typically used for testing air defenses.
Western officials imply that the Israeli strike, seen as a response to previous Iranian aggression, aimed to demonstrate Israel’s ability to bypass Iranian air-defense systems. Discussions with international leaders, including President Joe Biden and foreign ministers from Britain and Germany, influenced the decision to scale back a more extensive attack plan.
