Tragedy struck along the Ijebu-Ode-Ore-Benin Expressway as two lives were lost and three others sustained injuries in a ghastly accident occurring at approximately 8:24 pm, just after Ogbere Junction.
Reports indicate that the deceased were trapped inside one of the vehicles involved in the collision.
The incident, as revealed by Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, was attributed to route violation and excessive speeding. Involved in the crash were a DAF truck bearing plate number AYE886ZQ and a Volvo truck with plate number MUS246YH.
According to Okpe, the injured victims were promptly rushed to the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, while one of the deceased was taken to the hospital’s morgue. The second body was handed over to the family for interment.
In a statement, Okpe detailed the rescue operation carried out by FRSC Ogbere Outpost Command, emphasizing the urgency of diverting traffic from inward Benin to outward to avert further mishaps.
Expressing his dismay, Sector Commander Anthony Uga lamented the prevalence of excessive speeding among motorists, which often results in tragic outcomes. He stressed the need for strict adherence to speed limits, noting that the installation of speed limit devices in commercial vehicles has been mandated to mitigate such incidents.
Uga urged motorists to prioritize safety by obeying speed regulations and adhering to road signs, emphasizing the imperative of reducing the alarming rate of road fatalities in Nigeria.
