The Enugu State Government is collaborating with the families of the late Nollywood actors John Okafor, also known as Mr. Ibu, and Obumneme Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope, to organize a dignified burial for them.
Aka Eze Aka, the Commissioner for Information and Communication in Enugu State, shared this during an interview with journalists in Enugu.
Expressing sorrow over the loss of these actors, Mr. Aka emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a respectful farewell.
Regarding Junior Pope’s burial, he mentioned that although a specific date hasn’t been set yet, the government is in close communication with the family to understand their preferences for the ceremony.
“As part of his burial committee on a personal level, I will convey the family’s wishes to the government,” Aka stated.
He also confirmed that the state government will be present at Mr Ibu’s scheduled burial on 28 June.
Addressing the delay in response to Junior Pope’s passing, Mr. Aka clarified that this was due to various factors surrounding the incident and misinformation.
He highlighted the need for sensitivity towards the family’s emotions before making public announcements about such matters. “We are focused on ensuring a fitting tribute for both these talented individuals,” he remarked.
Additionally, Mr. Aka reiterated Governor Peter Mbah’s dedication to bolstering the entertainment sector in Enugu State by establishing an entertainment village, aiming to retain and support local talents.
The tragic boat accident that claimed Junior Pope’s life, along with three colleagues, on April 10 deeply saddened the nation, as did Mr Ibu’s passing on March 2 after battling health challenges.
