Over 1000 displaced after rainstorm in Kogi

No fewer than 1,000 people were homeless due to a heavy rainstorm in the Iyara community. 
Iyara Community is the headquarters of the Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The incident occurred on the 8th of April, 2024 which left the victims unprepared and led to the destruction of homes and properties.

The Eleta Oluyara of Iyara, Oba Jacob Meduten, pleaded with the government and individuals to help the victims end their suffering.

Furthermore, the Kogi State Government, under the leadership of the governor,Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has appealed to the people of the communities in the state to take precautions and maintain standard roofing on their homes and good environmental sanitation in their areas as the rainy season is fast approaching.

The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Mouktar Atimah, confirmed the incident in Iyara. He said:

“We got the information that a natural disaster happened in Iyara, and immediately the office deployed men for an on-the-spot assessment.

“The local government chairman also called us, and we are partnering together to see how to reduce the suffering of the affected victims.

“Everybody living on low ground should move to higher ground. Kogites should be very careful about the way they roof their houses because if they are not roofed properly, breezes can easily access the building.”
