NDLEA apprehends 319 suspects, confiscates 4.7 tonnes of illegal substances in Kano – commander

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has, between January and March 2024, in Kano State detained 319 people and seized 4.7 tons of illegal drugs.

This was disclosed by Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, the NDLEA state commander, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.

Idris-Ahmad said the total number of drugs seized by operatives is over four tons, made up of 2.3kg of marijuana and 2.4kg of psychotropic substances, including a million pills of tramadol and 1.9kg of other dangerous substances, from 14 females and 305 males, respectively.

He claims that the command was able to prosecute 33 people for drug trafficking and other drug-related offenses in just three months.

“We rehabilitated 26 drug addicts, processed 38 visa clearances, and conducted 30 drug integrity tests for individuals and members of the state Emirate Council.”

According to the commander, 39 illegal drug establishments that were acting as hubs for drug activity in the state were taken down by the command during the period under consideration.

Idris-Ahmad gave Kano people assurances that sufficient precautions will be taken to guarantee a drug-free, peaceful vacation during the upcoming Eid-El-Fitr celebration.

“The command is committed to maintaining law and order during this festive period and to preventing the spread of illicit drugs in the community.”

“We will continue to work to dismantle drug trafficking networks, arrest perpetrators, and prevent the spread of drug abuse in the state,” Idris-Ahmad added.
