Student loan program in progress says President

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s dedication to the student loan program was reaffirmed by the Presidency on Wednesday.

The plan is receiving final touches to ensure proper implementation, according to Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who spoke to State House media following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

“The student loan program will begin on a new date. It is being introduced in a suitable manner, and steps are being taken in that direction.

The president expressed his commitment to the project, saying, “He wants to get this thing done as soon as possible; you know, it’s one of his flagship programs.”

After the president signed the Access to Higher Education Act, 2023 on June 12, 2023, financially disadvantaged students attending Nigerian postsecondary institutions would henceforth be able to apply for interest-free loans.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund was established by this act, which was also known as the Student Loan Law. Its duties include overseeing loan applications, awards, disbursements, and repayments.

Fan of the student loan bill Femi Gbajabiamila is the current Chief of Staff to the President and was also Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Under the law, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund must be established and given the authority to supervise the management, coordinating, and oversight of student loans across the country.
