FG to award scholarship to Nuclear Science students

The Federal Government has said it would prioritise the award of scholarship to Students interested in studying Nuclear Science.

The course which its curriculum is currently been prepared by the National Universities Commission (NUC), will be offered at the various universities and Polytechnics in the country.

A statement made available to NATIONAL TELESCOPE by Director Press and Public Relations, Ben. Bem Goong, stated that the course will avail tertiary institutions in the country the opportunity of training Nuclear Scientists and Technologists locally.

According to the statement, the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, stated this through the Minister of state for Education, Hon. Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu while playing host to the leadership of the Nigerian Nuclear Energy.

The minister however directed the NUC to expedite action towards the completion of the Nuclear Energy Curriculum, to enable the commencement of the programme at the institutions.

It reads in part, “Education Minister, Prof Tahir Mamman has directed the National Universities Commission (NUC) to expedite action towards the completion of the Nuclear Energy Curriculum to enable some Nigerian Universities and the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission as well as Polytechnics to commence the training of Nuclear Scientists and Technologists locally.

“Professor Tahir Mamman was speaking through the Minister of state for Education, Hon. Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu when he received in audience, the leadership of the Nigerian Nuclear Energy Commission who paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja recently.

“The Minister also indicated that the Federal Government will prioritize the award of Scholarships to students wishing to study Nuclear Science and related courses within and outside the country.”

Speaking earlier, the Director-General of the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Professor Yusuf Aminu Ahmed stressed the need for human capital development, saying it is critical for the country to pursue the Nuclear programme to meet her energy and pharmaceutical needs.

He disclosed to Minister that his Commission is partnering with Korea and China to meet its training needs for Nuclear Scientists.”
