The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo Sector Command, has raised concerns over the accumulation of 6,138 uncollected driver’s licenses in the state.

In an interview with journalists on Wednesday in Ibadan, Sector Commander Joshua Adekanye highlighted the urgency of addressing this issue.

Adekanye strongly emphasized the need to discourage the use of temporary driver’s licenses beyond the designated timeframe. He expressed disappointment at the low turnout for the collection of processed driver’s licenses despite the efforts made by the corps to streamline the collection process across its centers in the state.

“We currently have a substantial number of unclaimed licenses, totaling 6,138, across our various collection centers within the state,” Adekanye stated. He urged individuals who have already undergone the process of obtaining a driver’s license to promptly collect their permanent licenses.

Adekanye remarked, “Continuing to operate vehicles on Nigerian roads with temporary licenses is not in compliance with regulations.” He elaborated on the simplified collection procedure, highlighting that drivers could now acquire their processed licenses within a mere five minutes at the center.

The sector commander announced the commencement of a specialized operation aimed at removing rickety vehicles from Nigerian roads. These vehicles, when improperly maintained, pose a significant risk as they might break down at critical points, potentially causing road traffic accidents.

“We want to reiterate to the public the importance of refraining from using such unfit vehicles on the roads to prevent potential arrests and subsequent prosecution,” Adekanye cautioned.

Assuring the public, Adekanye underscored the commitment of FRSC officers to maintaining professionalism and courtesy while carrying out their duties. He noted that comprehensive training and regular briefings are provided to officers to ensure their adherence to public expectations during patrols.

“Our officers receive ongoing training and engagement, including daily parades and special briefings on Mondays, all geared toward enhancing their performance and interactions with the public,” Adekanye concluded.
