The Medical Guild, the representative body of medical doctors employed by the Lagos State Government, has uncovered critical information about the tragic incident that claimed the life of Dr. Diaso Vwaere.
According to the guild’s chairman, Dr. Sa’eid Ahmad, an unqualified contractor, Orivac Engineering, was responsible for installing the malfunctioned elevator without possessing proper certification for elevator system installation.
During a recent news conference, Dr. Ahmad disclosed that the elevator, installed in June 2021, failed to function correctly during its commissioning, with the contractor attributing it to inadequate power supply from a generator hired for the occasion.
Shockingly, there were no verifiable maintenance services carried out by the installer, despite the need for regular upkeep every four weeks.
In light of these findings, the Medical Guild demands that the contractor, installers, and all involved parties be held accountable and face legal consequences.
The chairman also highlighted the ongoing infrastructural challenges faced by the General Hospital’s house officers’ quarters in Odan, Lagos, since its rehabilitation in 2015-2016.
He urged the state government to prioritize safety by installing a new elevator, handled by a certified installer, and ensuring regular maintenance to prevent future tragedies.
