A tragic incident has left over 20 people dead after a wooden cargo boat, named ‘Godbless Dickson,’ exploded and went up in flames on the waterways of Bayelsa State.
The explosion occurred on Wednesday as the boat was travelling near the Ezetu 1 community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
The vessel, which was carrying more than 64 passengers and crew members, was also heavily loaded with cargo.
Bayelsa State Police spokesperson, ASP Musa Mohammed, confirmed the death toll, stating that rescue efforts are still underway by the Marine Police Unit.
The boat was reportedly transporting farm produce from a rural settlement to Swali market in Yenagoa when it caught fire.
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Bayelsa Chapter, also confirmed the incident through its Chairman, Mr. Ogoniba Ipigansi.
He reported that the union dispatched a rescue team with two-speed boats to the scene in an effort to save those on board.
Mr. Ipigansi further stated that the total number of casualties is still being determined, as many passengers remain missing while the rescue operation continues.
The Chairman of Southern Ijaw LGA, Target Segibo, lamented the loss of lives and described the event as a grievous disaster.
He reiterated the need for stronger safety regulations in marine transportation to avoid similar incidents in the future.
