Two men Julius Matthew and Vincent Aneh were on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged possession of firearms. Matthew, 21 and Aneh, 19, are facing a two-count charge of illegal possession of firearms and belonging to a secret cult. According to the Prosecutor, ASP Clifford Ogu, the accused persons committed the offences with some other persons still at large, on Dec. 20, 2018 at Igando, Lagos.
Ogu said the duo was caught with a locally made gun and three expended cartridges. “The police also found in their possession some T-shirts with the inscription “Virking Nonsmen Cultism Group’’ “They were arrested when they were trying to rob a commuter,” he said. The offences contravened sections 42, 330 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
According to the reports, Section 42 provides a two-year jail term for belonging to a secret cult, while Section 330 attracts seven years imprisonment for being in possession of firearms. In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr J.A Adegun, granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum. Adegun said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidences of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government. The case was adjourned until Feb. 4 for mention. (NAN)
