Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju, SAN, the Chairman of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC), shared a strategic vision on Sunday to achieve an impressive 70% voter participation in the imminent Local Government Councils’ Election.

Speaking during a live radio program in Ibadan, Olagunju not only shed light on this ambitious target but also underscored the extraordinary feat achieved in the 2021 local government councils election.

He illuminated how the voter turnout had surpassed historical records, indicating a paradigm shift in the state’s election narrative. The key, he believes, lies in the commitment of all stakeholders to effectively play their roles.

He said, “the pursuit of impeccable election conduct is a deliberate and gradual process. The state has witnessed a transition from interim local government administration to full-fledged democratic governance at the grassroots level—a significant shift in the political landscape.

“Within the state’s political arena, the revelation remains as captivating as it is promising. A notable 18 registered political parties have expressed their keenness to partake in the forthcoming election.

“We made significant strides during the local government council elections conducted in 2021. Election is a dynamic process with room for improvement.

“In a candid admission, looking back into the history, historical voter participation percentages that once stood at meager 12%, 16%, 18%, and 21%.

“The transformative journey finds its true essence in the monumental leap of 29.6% voter participation achieved during the 2021 election. This is a beacon of progress, signifying not just the increase but a tangible stride towards enhanced voter engagement.

“The most notable accomplishment is the removal of the interim local government administration, marking a pivotal turning point.

“The future, shines brightly on April 27, 2024—a day etched in the calendar for the next local government councils election. This day holds the potential to witness a historic 70% voter turnout, a transformative moment reflecting the shared trust and confidence placed in the commission by the residents.

“Drawing attention to the present, the recent spectacle of political parties’ primaries, with a distinct departure from the past, the Commission observed a harmonious and successful process, replete with peaceful proceedings. The future, I believe, hinges on this very spirit—an ethos I fervently endorse for both political parties and voters alike.

“This collective effort holds the key to ensuring a tranquil and credible election, setting the stage for a new era of participatory democracy in Oyo State.”
