The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the death of five individuals and the arrest of a suspect in connection with a food poisoning incident in Afashio-Uzairue, Etsako West Local Government Area.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Yamu, reported that the tragic event took place on October 26, sending shockwaves through the community. The victims include four boys and one girl.
SP Yamu said: “The Edo State Police Command received a report on October 26, 2024, around 7:30 a.m. from Elogie Ezekiel, a resident of Afashio, that he had found the bodies of his son Emmanuel Elogie, aged 19, and his friends.”
According to the police report, Emmanuel’s friend, Nurudeen, was found lifeless in the corridor. In the bedroom, Ezekiel found his son alongside his girlfriend, Ada Samuel, aged 16, both deceased.
Two other friends, siblings Samuel and Jeffrey Ayegwalo, were found dead in the living room.
On October 29, the police arrested 16-year-old Aisha Suleiman, who was alleged to have caused the deaths through food poisoning.
Community members reportedly tried to attack Suleiman before police from the Jattu Division intervened, rescuing her from a mob. She was then transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
The police have vowed to conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the details surrounding the incident.
