Abia State government has extended a helping hand to 106-year-old Akara seller, Ma Chidinma Eluwa, by providing her with a monthly stipend and plans to enhance her business.

Ma Chidinma Eluwa, a resilient centenarian, has been frying the local delicacy on Owerri road in Umuahia, Abia State for decades. Despite facing challenges like the loss of her husband and being left with just one living son, she has continued her business operations.

Chief of Staff to Abia State governor, Caleb Ajagba, noticed the long queue of customers at her shop during a visit on July 29th, 2023. Impressed by her dedication and longevity in the Akara business, he recommended her for special government intervention.

Following further investigations, the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Vulnerable Groups and Poverty Alleviation stepped in. Mama Chidinma Eluwa was invited to their office on August 9th, 2023, where financial support and business sustainability plans were discussed. She was also registered in the National Identity Numbers system to facilitate the opening of a bank account for her stipends.

Abia State government aims to not only provide monthly stipends but also financially support her business. Plans are in motion to celebrate her upcoming birthday and longevity.

Mama Chidinma Eluwa expressed her gratitude towards Governor Alex Otti, Chief of Staff Caleb Ajagba, and Special Assistant on vulnerable groups and poverty alleviation, Mrs Ifeoma Thomas, for their support. She believes that this assistance will contribute to her extended life.

Mrs Ifeoma Thomas further shared that Mama Chidinma Eluwa will be placed on a monthly stipend and a bank account will be established in her name. The Nigerian Identity Management Agency (NIMC) captured her details, ensuring secure financial transactions. The stipend will be deposited into her account at the end of each month.

Mama Chidinma Eluwa also seized the opportunity to advise the youth to avoid criminal activities, prioritize education, and acquire skills that can benefit society. Her story serves as an inspiring example of resilience and determination.
