A renowned Niger Delta activist and the National Coordinator of the Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ), Comrade Chief Sheriff Mulade, has inaugurated a 10-man local organizing committee (LOC) for the Delta Ethnic Peace and Unity Football Tournament.
The tournament is designed to foster peaceful coexistence among ethnic groups in Delta Central and Delta South Senatorial Districts.
Scheduled to kick off on November 16, 2024, at Ode-Itsekiri, the tournament will be part of the activities marking the United Nations International Day of Tolerance on December 7, 2024.
This year marks the fourth edition of the tournament, which has now been expanded to include the Isoko and Urhobo ethnic groups alongside the Itsekiri and Ijaw communities.
Speaking at the ceremony held at CEPEJ’s Africa for Peace Centre in Ugolo-Okpe near Osubi, Chief Mulade emphasized the significance of the event in promoting peace across the region. He also introduced Hon. Kenneth Nwaomucha as the chairman of the organizing committee.
“The inclusion of more ethnic groups is our way of ensuring that all people in Delta Central and South can live in harmony, creating a stable environment for the government to develop the state,” Mulade stated.
The Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, is expected to kick off the tournament as the Royal Father of the Day at Ode-Itsekiri. The competition boasts attractive prizes, with the champion set to win N2 million, the runner-up N1.5 million, the third-place finisher N1 million, and the fourth-place team N500,000.
Hon. Kenneth Nwaomucha, Chairman of the Delta State Sports Association, praised Chief Mulade’s efforts and called on committee members to work diligently to ensure the tournament’s success. Dr. Godwin Orhadahwe, CEPEJ’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, urged the media to provide extensive coverage and mobilize stakeholders to achieve the tournament’s goals.
